Learn how BlueTick for Jira shows recent visitors on Jira work items, where to find it, and what data is stored.

BlueTick for Jira helps your team see who has recently opened a Jira work item—similar to read receipts in chat apps. Each work item shows short list of recent viewers so you can tell at a glance who has been looking at a work item.

What you can do with BlueTick

Capability Details
See recent viewers For each work item, the app shows up to 10 people who recently viewed that work item.
See when they looked Times are shown in plain language (for example, “5 minutes ago” or “2 days ago”).
Focus on others Your own visit is not shown in the list; the panel highlights other teammate's activity. Other teammates will see your activity.

Where to find BlueTick in Jira

  1. Open any work item in Jira (the full work item view, not only a board card).
  2. Look at the work item context area. Depending on your Jira version and layout, context panels may appear in the right-hand sidebar, under tabs, or in a similar area next to the work item details.
  3. Find the panel named Recent Visitors (it may also show the label BlueTick for Jira).
  4. Open that panel to see the list.

Note: Your administrator controls which apps are installed. If you do not see Recent Visitors / BlueTick for Jira, the app may not be installed on your site, or your role may not have access to that panel.

Understanding the list

  • Empty list — No other users have opened this work item recently (since the app was installed/enabled), or there is nothing to show yet. Your own activity are not shown.
  • Names and times — Each row shows a person's name (as it appears in Jira) and when they viewed the work item, relative to now.
  • Limit of 10 — When more than 10 different people view a work item, older entries are removed. Only the most recent activity is kept per work item.

Licensing and activation

BlueTick is distributed through the Atlassian Marketplace and may require a valid license for your Jira site (depending on your Marketplace plan and how your organization purchases apps).

  • If the license is not active, you may see a short message asking you to contact your administrator to activate the app.
  • Administrators should confirm the app is installed and licensed for your Jira Cloud site via Settings → Apps (or your organization's app management process).

For administrators

Installation

  • Install BlueTick for Jira from the Atlassian Marketplace .
  • Assign or purchase a license according to your Atlassian and Marketplace rules.

After updates

When the app vendor releases a version that changes permissions or data access, your site may need to upgrade the app installation so the new permissions apply. Follow Atlassian’s prompts when installing or updating Marketplace apps.

User access

Who can see the Recent Visitors panel follows your Jira work item permissions and app visibility settings. If some users cannot see the panel, check that they can open the work item and that the app is available on the site.

Privacy and data

To track user activity, BlueTick uses:

  • The identifier of the user (it does not store any name, email, or other PII).
  • A timestamp of the visit.

Data is stored in app storage on Atlassian's servers. It is scoped per work item (not pasted into work item description or custom fields by default). Retention is limited by the 10-entry list per work item: older visitors fall off the list as new people view the work item.

Privacy policy and compliance — For legal terms, data processing, subprocessors, and retention commitments, refer to the privacy policy and Marketplace listing. This user guide does not replace those documents.

Frequently asked questions

Why don’t I see myself in the list?
The list is meant to show other recent viewers. Your visit is still counted for your colleagues.

Why is the list empty?
No other users have viewed this work item recently, or the app was just installed and no one else has opened the work item yet.

Does this work on mobile?
If your Jira mobile client shows work item context apps, you may see the panel there. Layout varies by device and Jira version.

The feature is designed for display inside Jira. Export behavior depends on Atlassian and the app; do not rely on this list for audit trails unless your administrator confirms otherwise.
